The Cairngorms is the best place in the country for the Scottish Crossbill, the only bird unique to Britain. Golden Eagle, Osprey, Dotterell, Capercaillie, and Crested Tit are just a few of the bird species found here. There are excellent RSPB Reserves close by at Loch an Eilen and Loch Garten. |

Cairngorm National Park is a mountainous area. Both the Cairngorm Massif and the Monadhliadh mountains are within easy range of Cluny Croft and Britains highest mountain, Ben Nevis (4406 feet), is 30 miles to the west. Within these wild lands lie some of the finest walking and mountaineering country in Scotland, containing all the wild high plateaus and mountains of the Cairngorms - four of Scotlands five highest peaks and some 50 Munros (mountains over 3000 ft) in total lie inside the park with another 7 on the eastern boundary (the Monadh Liath and east of Drumochter). |

Mountain bike hire is available throughout the valley with a wide variety of cycle routes to test your ability. For the more active, there are numerous high level mountain tracks such as the gruelling Corrieyairrick Pass, climbing over 700m through the Monadhliadh mountains (following the route that Bonnie Price Charlie took prior to capturing Edinburgh). For serious off-roaders, the Forestry Commission have carved a series of hair raising technical trails through the ancient rock and forest at Laggan Wolftrax (3 miles from Cluny Croft). Other nearby facilities including the Witchs Trail at Nevis Range (30 miles) which hosted a recent World Cup cross country event. Next to Nevis Range, the World Cup downhill track on Aonach Mor, with a vertical drop of 550m in 2.6km, and with big dropoffs, rock steps and jumps, is one of the longest and toughest in the world. There are also numerous trails through the beautiful Rothiemurchus Forest catering for all levels of off road experience. |
